A Top Surgeon Shares How He Took Control of His Gut Health

We’ve been told our whole lives to eat certain fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to stay in good health.

However, according to Dr. Steven Gundry — a world-renowned heart surgeon — many so called “health foods” in the American diet contain a toxin, that could be expanding your waistline.

This harmful condition is best known as “leaky gut,” and it’s affecting millions of people nationwide. Signs include weight gain, fatigue, digestive discomfort, stiff, achy joints, and even skin problems.

The good news is, this problem can be easily fixed from your own home.

Supermodel Grannies

Forget everything you thought you knew about aging. In a groundbreaking study, lab mice given an experimental drug have earned the nickname "supermodel grannies" for looking astonishingly youthful as they aged past their expected lifespans.

The BBC reports that an experimental drug targeting interleukin-11—a protein that helps build our bones early in life but later causes inflammation linked to aging illnesses—has produced astounding results. Published in Nature, research by scientists from Imperial College London, Duke-NUS in Singapore, and the MRC Lab of Medical Sciences reveals that the drug works wonders: it makes mice leaner, gives them healthier fur, and significantly lowers cancer rates among them.

According to a UK government research arm press release, the drug extended the median lifespan of male mice by 22.4% and female mice by 25%. The next big question: could humans benefit the same way?

Alcohol for Maximum Health

According to new research published in the journal “Medicine” reveals something astonishing: moderate drinking might actually be good for you. Yes, you read that right.

Men can safely enjoy up to 11 grams of alcohol per day, while women can have 10 grams. To put that in perspective, that's about half a drink per day. But here’s where it gets even more intriguing. When broken down by type and week, the guidelines get super specific. Men can sip seven glasses of red wine per week, while women can enjoy six. For white wine or champagne, men can have up to five glasses, and women four. Both can safely indulge in up to four glasses of fortified wine weekly.

Using data from 502,490 individuals, these researchers meticulously analyzed alcohol consumption habits and correlated them with various health outcomes. Their findings revealed a fascinating U-shaped curve for cardiovascular disease, indicating higher risks at both extremes of drinking but lower risks with moderate consumption. Even more captivating, they found that wine, in particular, offered protective benefits for both heart and kidneys compared to beer and spirits.

The study highlighted that safe doses of alcoholic beverages could shield against conditions like diabetes, depression, dementia, epilepsy, liver cirrhosis, and other digestive diseases, without upping cancer risks.

Of course, statistical analyses have their limits. Factors like diet, weight, and smoking were considered but not included in the final conclusions, potentially altering the risk landscape for heart disease.

Cheers to fascinating science!

Pre-Sleep Protein

Ever wondered if your last meal of the day could be the secret weapon to building muscle?

Studies show 30 to 40 grams of protein about 30 minutes before hitting the sack results in noticeably bigger gains and more strength. But eating that late might mess with your sleep quality and recovery.

So, what’s the magic trick? Timing is everything! Instead of eating right before bed, slide that protein feast to about 2 or 3 hours earlier. Opt for slower-digesting proteins or mix in some carbs to keep the amino acids flowing without ruining your sleep.

While whey protein has a faster absorption rate at 10 grams per hour, other options like eggs are more like a slow-release capsule, taking longer to digest (3 grams per hour). That means a 20-gram serving of egg protein takes 7 hours to digest.

If you're serious about muscle gain, incorporate 30 to 40 grams of protein into your last meal of the day for that extra edge. Lean towards slower-digesting proteins like Greek yogurt, casein, or good ol' animal proteins. Better yet, enjoy a balanced meal with protein, carbs, and fats. This way, you won't need to eat right before bed, and your sleep stays undisturbed.

Acne Hurts More Than Just Your Skin

Anyone battling acne knows it's not just about appearances. There's the social stigma, the humiliation, the creeping insecurity. The scars left behind are not just on the skin, but etched deep in the psyche.

This revelation isn't groundbreaking but requires attention. Research from the Ricart Medical Institute (IMR) in Spain reveals that 60% of people fret over the lingering physical and psychological consequences acne can bring. "Acne can be stigmatizing and lay a heavy emotional load on individuals," says Dr. Marta González, a dermatologist at IMR Madrid. "Even if you haven't battled it yourself, you likely know someone tormented by the persistent frustration and plummeting self-esteem acne brings."

Acne's impact on our mental state is profound. The daily struggle with breakouts can send one on an emotional rollercoaster, with mood swings dictated by their skin. The IMR study underscores a grim reality: mental health decline severely among acne sufferers. "Numerous studies link acne with diminished self-esteem; a spike in acne often triggers a slump in self-confidence," González emphasizes. "This spiral can erode self-worth, strain social bonds, and fuel anxiety and depression."

The blow to self-esteem can be devastating, especially for those whose self-image is already fragile or who tie their value to their looks and others' perceptions. "It hinges on your personality and the weight you place on physical appearance," notes Laura Palomares, a psychologist at Avance Psicólogos. "It's rooted in your initial self-concept. Those most vulnerable to acne's psychological impact often struggled with low self-esteem beforehand."

Expert recommendations and safe guidelines aside, it’s also important to find role models that put aside the established canons about what a “perfect” appearance should be. Luckily, more and more celebrities have been expressing their respective realities.

Another key along the way is to work on self-confidence. “Prioritizing our physical and mental health above physical appearance is an important factor in changing our attitude”
